Blue Responsibility Award: Manufacturing for a Sustainable Terra Preta Sanitation System

With around 40% of the world’s population currently lacking basic sanitation, the need for sustainable solutions is urgent. In order to demonstrate the broad range of applications of sustainable manufacturing, the organizers of the 13th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing (GCSM) launched an international competition for sustainable sanitation system design. The GCSM 2014 “Blue Responsibility Award: Manufacturing for a Sustainable Terra Preta Sanitation System” intended to stimulate the development of new sustainable sanitation systems that enable the reuse of human excreta. The objective of the competition was to design a sanitation system that creates the maximum value from what is today considered as waste. The following documents are available to be downloaded: The following jury selected the best contributions:
  • Mr. Gunter Pauli, Founder of the Blue Economy Initiative
  • Mr. Günther Seliger, Professor at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany
  • Ms. Hong Li, President of Low Carbon Club, Peking University Alumni Venture Association, China
  • Ms. Nuria Costa Leonardo, Directora General of the Red Mexicana de Mujeres, Mexico
  • Mr. Mohd Razman Salim, Professor at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia
  • Mr. Ralf Otterpohl, Professor at the Hamburg University of Technology, Germany
These are the placements of the GCSM Award 2014 "Blue Responsibility Award: Manufacturing for a Sustainable Terra Preta Sanitation System":
  • 1st Place with 5000€: Xavier University with the project "Terra Preta Sanitation System for Post Disaster Transitional Communities in the Philippines"
