Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing
2014
22nd - 24th September
Johor Bahru - Malaysia
CIRP

Welcome

Sustainable manufacturing has emerged as the leading paradigm to address the dilemma of maintaining a progressive economic growth based on manufacture of goods and services without damaging our environment or future economic and social structures. While manufacturing is a major driver of civilized development that provides high quality living standards, its impact can be harmful if not managed and minimized, e.g. it may cause damage such as depletion of natural resources, global warming or climatic change and the generation of toxic wastes.

On 22nd - 24th September 2014, the Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing (GCSM, www.gcsm.eu) is expected to attract representatives from science and industry from all over the world to Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Sponsored by the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), it will be the 12th conference in the GCSM tradition, which has already been held in Alabama, Shanghai, Sao Carlos, Madras, Abu Dhabi, St. Petersburg, Istanbul, and Berlin. In 2014 it will be hosted by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The conference serves as a forum for international research institutes and industrial companies related to the area of sustainable manufacturing. It offers keynote speeches, panel discussions, parallel sessions and a poster forum. Your contributions and participation will be appreciated.

The Collaborative Research Centre "Sustainable Manufacturing - Shaping Global Value Creation" explores how the dynamics of global competition and cooperation can be utilized for lending wings to processes of innovation and mediation towards the reasonably demanded sustainability of our globe. Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), 50 international researchers from eleven different institutes located in Berlin, investigate strategies, technological solutions and teaching approaches for sustainable global value creation. The most promising results of this major interdisciplinary project will be presented at the 12th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing (GCSM).

With around 40% of the world's population currently lacking basic sanitation, the need for sustainable solutions is urgent. In order to demonstrate the broad range of applications of sustainable manufacturing, the organizers of the 12th Global Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing (GCSM) launched an international competition for sustainable sanitation system design. The GCSM 2014 "Blue Responsibility Award: Manufacturing for a Sustainable Terra Preta Sanitation System" intends to stimulate the development of new sustainable sanitation systems that enable the reuse of human excreta. The objective of the competition is to design a sanitation system that creates the maximum value from what today often is considered as waste.

Under the auspices of GCSM, post conference short courses/workshops on sustainable manufacturing with topics of high interests to industry partners and academics alike will be offered immediately after the conference. These short courses/workshops are aimed at providing an opportunity for those interested in acquiring further knowledge in these specific areas. The workshops will be held in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's branch campus in Kuala Lumpur (UTM Kuala Lumpur), the capital of Malaysia. Incidentally, 2014 is the visit Malaysia Year and numerous events and festivals have been lined up for visitors to Malaysia throughout the year.

We are especially looking forward to welcome you to Johor Bahru, Malaysia for the 12th GCSM. Higher representation from participants of Asia-Pacific countries is highly expected, to share with participants from Europe and North America the emerging potentials of sustainable manufacturing.

Best regards,
